Community or Campus Involvement
Most of our focus has been on developing our Alumni Chapter, but we have found time for a few philanthropic endeavors over the years. In 2002 and 2003 we raised money for Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America by participating in their annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraising event. In early 2003 we dispersed the fund we’d collected for two families of Kappa Sigs killed in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. We also had a team of alumni working the concessions booths at the 2003 Pepsi Kid Around, a fundraising project for the Family Place, a shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence.
Over the past two years we have turned our attention to helping our Alumni Brothers further their careers. In November 2004 Jason McClanahan (Delta-Pi ’99) set up a private recruitment meeting for our Alumni Chapter with Wachovia Bank. This was just as Wachovia was beginning to move into Texas and needed to hire people to fill every position in their new branch banks. Several alumni, undergrads, and friends attended. A few eventually received job-offers while many others were able to develop vendor relationships with Wachovia.
In May of 2005 Brothers Jeff Pirkl (Beta-Rho ’84) and Matt Verhalen (Xi ’98) launched our new Networking Group. This is a lead referral group intended to help Kappa Sigma Alumni find new customers or business opportunities. Both Jeff and Matt had previous experience working with referral groups and initial response to the idea was very positive. Unfortunately interest waned and the program was discontinued in December 2006. We are hopeful that Jett and Matt will retool their program and get it started again this summer
